Subject Intent Statement
At St. Pius X we believe that all of our children should have access to a broad and balanced curriculum that encourages them to gain the creativity and confidence they need to succeed in life. Our creative Music curriculum fulfils the National Curriculum requirements by using Charanga Music scheme to support the delivery of the subject.
The scheme of work we use to support Music is planned to ensure effective progression and that all children are given the opportunity to explore their creativity and talents that God has blessed them with. At St Pius X it is our aim to provide opportunities for all to create, play, perform and enjoy music to develop the skills to appreciate a wide variety of musical forms, and to begin to make judgements about the quality of music.
Our delivery of Music is adapted to ensure it meets the needs of all our pupils. There are opportunities for smaller groups who may need extra support, to be taught in quieter areas. There are also numerous opportunities for gifted and talented pupils, with 1 to 1 music tuition and a range of opportunities to further their music knowledge and to help children to develop to their full potential musically.
Music has a range of meaningful links to many other National Curriculum Subjects. We teach Music on a half termly basis, one half term using the Charanga scheme and the other teaching our Music skills within other lessons, supporting that cross curricular approach to learning. Our Music lessons are coherently planned and sequenced to ensure all children make progress and have the skills to support their creative development. In the Spring term, we hold a whole school concert linked with our Rotary afternoon. During this afternoon each class is given the opportunity to share and perform for our local community, showcasing what they have learnt that year.
As a Catholic school our faith underpins our key teachings and we want all children to appreciate and explore the creative talents they have been blessed with. At St Pius X, we are a family and families look after each other. Music is a vital tool in supporting our children’s personal, social and emotional development, which is of upmost importance to our school. One of the more recent whole school projects we have taken part in is ‘Cumbria Sings’. A project delivered by our local Music Hub to support children’s mental wellbeing across Cumbria.
Our Music curriculum is not only planned to help of pupils develop educationally but is planned to ensure our children’s have access to cultural capital opportunities, to give them experiences that they will never forget. Some of the wider opportunities we offer to our children include taking part in Furness Voices and UDance performance at our local theatre, The Forum. Alongside trips to take part in local competitions, our children’s cultural capital is also supported in school with access to live music sessions from a range of artists and group instrumental lessons. Music is at the heart of our school with singing in every assembly, a school choir and a range of school events such Pius Calling, which is a music festival which we hold at the end of every academic year.
