Rivers
When learning about rivers the children found one activity to particularly challenging and that was to follow the River Axe from source to mouth and to pin point particular places on that journey on sections of an ordinance survey map. Once it had been located the pupil had to recreate that section of the map.
Year 6
The children explored why the ‘Silk Road’ was the most important road two thousand years ago. They were able to link the famous traveller – Marco Polo – to the UK. Marco Polo was the largest container ship in the world when it was launched in 2012 and every eleven weeks it arrives at the port of Southampton carrying imported commodities from China.
The children interpreted satellite images and an Ordnance Survey map focusing on the city and port of Southampton. We used four figure and six figure grid references too.
The children studied why trade isn’t always fair for some people focusing our attention on banana farmers in St. Lucia. They compared the advantages and disadvantages of fair trade farmers and non fair trade farmers.
