EARLY YEARS FOUNDATION STAGE

Leader - Miss L Milligan

Welcome to our Early Years!

We are extremly proud to offer a OFSTED rated 'Good' Early Years provion at St Pius X, reflecting our commitment to providing an exceptional start to every child’s education. At St Pius X, children learn through a carefully balanced approach of adult-led activities and play-based learning opportunities, thoughtfully planned to build on their prior knowledge and experiences. Interactive learning experiences and educational trips are a strong part of our teaching, bringing learning to life and inspiring curiosity. We place a strong emphasis on the prime areas of learning while building strong, supportive relationships, ensuring that children feel valued and secure. At the heart of our EYFS is a dedication to nurturing each child’s development, putting them at the center of everything we do and giving them the very best start to their educational journey.

Early Years Curriculum

Our curriculum is carefully planned to ensure that every child makes sustained progress across all areas of learning. We use Development Matters to inform our curriculum intent, ensuring that our long-term planning reflects the age-related expectations and typical developmental pathways for our children. Planning is progressive and sequential, building on prior learning and children’s interests, so that each stage prepares them for the next.

We combine adult-led activities with child-initiated play, providing rich, purposeful experiences that develop key skills, particularly in communication, literacy, and personal, social, and emotional development. Our planning is responsive and flexible, allowing us to follow children’s curiosity while ensuring high expectations for all learners. We also embed real-life, interactive learning experiences and trips to make learning meaningful and memorable.

Regular assessment and observations inform our ongoing planning, ensuring that learning is targeted, challenging, and appropriately scaffolded. By aligning our practice with Development Matters, we can be confident that our curriculum is both broad and balanced, enabling children to achieve their potential and be exceptionally well-prepared for the next stage of their education.

Continuous Provision in our Early Years

In our EYFS setting, we use continuous provision to create a rich and engaging learning environment that supports children’s independence and exploration. Our classrooms are designed using the Early Excellence approach, ensuring that spaces are purposeful and promote active learning across all areas of development. Resources are carefully planned to allow progression between different age groups, enabling children to build on prior knowledge and skills as they grow. Additionally, we regularly introduce enhancements to our provision, providing new challenges and extending learning opportunities based on children’s interests and developmental needs. This approach ensures that every child can engage in meaningful, child-led learning while being supported to reach their full potential.
